Top Load Washing Machine Capacity

What does washing machine capacity actually mean? Whether your country measures it in Drum Volume or KG’s, the starting measurement for everybody is the same: drum volume in cu ft or in litres.  So does a bigger number in cu ft, litres or a rating in Kg’s mean you can process more laundry in a ‘bigger’ machine? Not necessarily.

Government formulas base their KG capacity on drum volume – this is the capacity rating you see listed on the machine. This is an outdated and flawed system and doesn’t take into consideration improvements in wash technology – it does NOT measure how much of that tub is actually usable for clothes, water and the best washing action. This is a major source of confusion when purchasing a top load washer.

The below video shows how a Speed Queen Top Load Washer, with a 3.2 cu ft capacity rated tub size, can hold the same load size as other competitors with larger capacity rated tubs.

There are many things to consider when purchasing a top load washer. So be careful not to read too much into the Kg rating of different washing machines.

HAPPY WASHING!

What’s in a Load?

Though load sizes will vary a little depending on the washer’s capacity, there are some general guidelines you can follow.
