Why not take advantage of the fresh motivation and rejuvenation that we feel at this time of year? If you want to really get that clean Spring fresh feeling in your house, then consider adding these items to your laundry list:
In the Spirit of Spring… Declare a Spring Wash Day
Shower curtain and liner
Daily showers leave soap scum and other residue on the liner, and moisture may lead to mold and mildew buildup. Wiping down your shower liner can be difficult. But, did you know you could clean it in your washing machine? Wash a plastic curtain on the highest water level with usual amount of detergent, and add two to three bath towels for extra cleaning agitation. Then, hang to dry or put into the dryer on low heat or air only. If your shower curtain is fabric or decorative, it’s best to wash it following the instructions on its care label. Or, to quickly freshen it, pop it into the dryer on air or fluff with a fabric softener sheet.
Bath mats and other small rugs
Vacuuming or shaking out small rugs and bath mats can’t get tough dirt out. (And, bath mats may be susceptible to the same mould and mildew problems as shower curtains.) Follow available wash instructions or put them in your washing machine on the delicate cycle inside a zippered pillowcase or laundry bag.
Pillows
Body oils and sweat can build up on pillows. Most pillows—except foam pillows—can be put in the washing machine, if you follow wash directions. Then, put them in the dryer with tennis balls for best results. Imagine how much better you’ll sleep knowing they’re clean.
Fabric/knit hats, scarves and mittens
Before you store these items after winter, wash them on a gentle cycle with mild detergent.
Jackets
If you or your family members tote workout clothes from the gym to home, it’s likely your gym bag could use a good cleaning! Check the label to ensure it is machine washable. (Then, enjoy the fresh smell before your next workout!)
Gym Bag
Like other accessories, it’s best to clean these items before they are stored.
Curtains
Curtains hold on to dust and other irritants that may affect family members who suffer from allergies. Cleaning them twice a year may cut down on allergy symptoms. We’ll leave you to decide whether clean curtains also make sunrises and sunsets more beautiful.
Pet Beds
Dogs and cats may track dirt from outside or other areas of the home. Plus, pet beds are magnets for pet hair. Remove the outer cover and wash it with the inner cushion (if it’s washable) in a mild detergent. Baking soda works like magic to eliminate odours.
Here’s to a successful wash day!
